“The Housewives”, Private Commissions:
This is Kim

(Note: “The Housewives” was a term I fondly coined in 2006 after I started getting shoot requests from private, individual women who became my clients. Many of the women who contacted me were married and in their mid 30’s and were doing the shoots as gifts to their husbands. The folder in my archives is still called this and so I’ve stuck to it, in part just for the irony: most of these women are not “housewives” at all, but strong independent and forward thinking women who I have had the honour of documenting.

All are private commissions and the demographic has changed substantially over the years. Some I’m still in contact with, others I’ve totally lost contact with, some have become friends, some may wish not to have their real names used, others don’t mind, some may have their faces obscured for privacy reasons, others have generously shared their experiences of being photographed.)

I loved shooting this really diverse series of images with Kim in 2014. Our shoot ranged from a neutral soft boudoir look, to a strong, high contrast B&W look with musical instruments (such as amplifiers, guitars, snare drums) and then lastly an “Oktoberfest” themed series of her in her classic German dirndl.

We brought in loads of props for the shoot and just had an easy-going and fun time working through the various options and drinking wine while we were at it.

I worked with Sara in late 2012 to capture this beautiful series of images. I loved working with her. She was one of those clients with a natural ease in front of the camera and I really enjoyed that we covered a number of quite contrasting looks from soft light to hard back-lighting picking up the silhouette of her body.

The shoot took place at one of my favourite interior locations close to my studio: Banksia Boutique Hotel in Rosebank Mowbray which is just out of Cape Town.

Commercial Commission
For “The Dating Game Killer” documentary film

I was commissioned in 2016 to shoot ‘prop images’ for the film The Dating Game Killer which was at the time being filmed in Cape Town for its 2017 release. The images were needed to be used as props in some of the scenes that were being shot. The movie is set in the 70’s, you can read more about it here. Its pretty disturbing but a very interesting true story.

My brief was in two parts:
1). a submission of my historic and archived work from which they would select approx 5-6 images for purchase ( a lot of this content came out of my student files from 2003-2004 ) and 2)., a new studio shoot done with a selection of 70’s furnishings they delivered. This shoot was done with three amazing friends of mine that were willing to participate just for the fun of it!

Ive added a selection from the shoots and submissions here.

I met and first photographed Hungarian born Tetyana in 2016 when we did this privately commissioned shoot using Banksia Boutique Hotel as our location.

Tetyana had a stack of beautiful and glamours reference images which we discussed and based the shoot on. We had a hair and makeup artist as well as a stylist working on the location with us.

I really liked that she so confidently wanted these images of herself for herself. Ive added a selection of pictures here from the shoot.
