Self Portrait Project: #1

Here is the first of the completed images from my self portraiture project, shot on Monday 28th July. Artist and friend, Barbara Wildenboer, popped into the studio after work to press the shutter release for me.

I lit the image so as to highlight the form and detail on my back (the focus of the image), there is a snoot lighting the middle area behind me to create a natural vignette around  my body. There is also a narrow fill light on the left of the frame which gives the highlights on my shins and arm.

I had planned to crop the chair out of the image but later realised it added a nice sense of context. I picked up the detail in my hair and face a little in post production stage but apart from very minor tweaking I left it as it was.

Its was surprising to be the subjects of my own demands in terms of posing. I know I often push my models quite hard to achieve my ideas and I could feel it in my back for the following two days!

Pregnancy: This is Elloise

Elloise with Chard at 8.5 months 06

I photographed Elloise at 8.5 months pregnant which was approximately two and a half weeks before her son Daniel was born. She arrived in the studio just as Sabian Ransome, one of my Playboy Playmates and also a fitness model was changing to leave from a shoot with me. The comparison at that moment, Elloise pointed out, of their two bodies was quite something.

The shoot was very simple and natural. I shot some images of her in her clothes with the natural light that was coming into our studio and then this series (shown here) which I lit to highlight her shape. It’s a lighting style I’ve used before with pregnant women but I positioned the lights on both sides of her and not so far back as I wanted to capture more detail in her face and on her body as apposed to just a very fine line of silhouette.

Just a few weeks later and about 9 hours after her natural home birth I photographed this portrait which I find very special… Daniel, just a few hours old with his Mother on the left and Grandmother on the right. Three generations, so much love and pride… Photographing women at this changing point in their lives is repeatedly inspirational and moving.

“The Housewives”, Nude Private Commissions:
This is Berel

(Note: “The Housewives” was a term I fondly coined in 2006 after I started getting shoot requests from private, individual women who became my clients. Many of the women who contacted me were married and in their mid 30’s and were doing the shoots as gifts to their husbands. The folder in my archives is still called this and so I’ve stuck to it, in part just for the irony: most of these women are not “housewives” at all, but strong independent and forward thinking women who I have had the honour of documenting.

All are private commissions and the demographic has changed substantially over the years. Some I’m still in contact with, others I’ve totally lost contact with, some have become friends, some may wish not to have their real names used, others don’t mind, some may have their faces obscured for privacy reasons, others have generously shared their experiences of being photographed.)

Fetish & Carnival Themed Shoot

I photographed Berel in December 2009 in the Ruth Prowse Photography Studio. It was at the time when Cara, one of my good friends, was shooting her own graduate body of work and had this stunning carnival pedestal rented for use in her images and made an awesome prop for this shoot, adding so much atmosphere and a dynamic object to pose with.

Fetish & Carnival Themed Shoot

We shot one or two pics with a Santa hat on which she has had the idea to use as her husbands Christmas card,- the shoot was his Christmas present… Love this pic + snowflakes, cute and fun, but sexy!

Kinky Xmas Girl! (10)

The shoot was fluid, she was wonderful to work with and open to the suggestions I’d had. The outcome was a few different sets of images: the carnival, fetishy ones, a series of standing nudes with pearls and a couple of sitting nudes, which were incredibly simple and very classic in nature.

Playboy South Africa published a story on my work a little while back and had asked for a selection of images from my “Housewife” shoots to print. The below image was printed, with her happy permission, as a full page.

PORTRAITURE: A nude in gold

This was a purely for-fun shoot which I completed in March 2011 in my studio. I had already done one similar shoot all in pink and this was a follow on in the series.

We drew about 10k in small and medium bank notes as props and I bought a bunch of gold props and fabrics. I painted an old found headboard and side table and broken chairs I’d found in a derelict yard near the studio as well as an old telephone, and other porcelain found objects. It was a nice project in set building a detailed postproduction.

Below is a screen grab from the raw, working files. You can see how much changed in postproduction in this final image above.

And some screen shots taken from the video footage…
