“The Housewives”, Private Commissions:
This is Simone

(Note: “The Housewives” was a term I fondly coined in 2006 after I started getting shoot requests from private, individual women who became my clients. Many of the women who contacted me were married and in their mid 30’s and were doing the shoots as gifts to their husbands. The folder in my archives is still called this and so I’ve stuck to it, in part just for the irony: most of these women are not “housewives” at all, but strong independent and forward thinking women who I have had the honour of documenting.

All are private commissions and the demographic has changed substantially over the years. Some I’m still in contact with, others I’ve totally lost contact with, some have become friends, some may wish not to have their real names used, others don’t mind, some may have their faces obscured for privacy reasons, others have generously shared their experiences of being photographed.)Pilates-Poses-by-Leah-Hawker-13Simone’s shoot was a little different, it was a private commission but non-nude, her idea was to shoot a series of quite symmetrical pilates poses. The images would be used both as gift in the form of a calendar for her partner and a series of beautifully framed prints for her home workout space.
Pilates-Poses-by-Leah-Hawker-11After a meeting about the shoot to discuss Simone’s ideas and the variable possibilities we decided on clean B&W-only garments, a soft lighting style with a mild shadow presence and lots of white space which meant shooting in a studio with a super broad built in infinity curve (thanks Roodebloem Studios).Pilates-Poses-by-Leah-Hawker-15Simone was amazing to shoot with her beautifully toned body (from pilates training of course) and the images look exactly the way I had imagined they should. Maybe we should publish a Cape Town Pilates book Simone?

Pilates-Poses-by-Leah-Hawker-05The simplicity of her bodys’ shape in the space, her serenity and the atmosphere of the photographs is a great reflection on the principles of the practice: concentration, control, center, flow, precision, and breathing.

A brief description, thanks to Wikipedia:

In his book Return to Life through Contrology, Joseph Pilates presents his method as the art of controlled movements, which should look and feel like a workout (not a therapy) when properly manifested.

If practiced with consistency, Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance in the whole human body. It puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong powerhouse, and improving coordination and balance. Pilates’ system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginner to advanced or to any other level, and also in terms of the instructor and practitioner’s specific goals and/or limitations. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises.

A Nude Creative Studio Photo-Shoot with Friends

Nude-Creative-Portraits-Series-09-Photographed-by-Leah-Hawker-Cape-Town

It was a night of a special kind of crazy in my studio. I invited a few friends over to participate in my self portrait project, suggesting only that they bring drinks and something/anything to use in a photo of themselves that I would take. It was an evening dedicated to spontaneity and wacky self expression and there was some kind of brilliant energy in the space that night.

The images published here are a small selection of what was taken during that shoot,- it omits one of the models who didn’t want her images made public and omits my self portraits (of which I shot three that night) as they are published as their own pieces.

There were a number of items I brought to use myself in the studio and each women brought a random array of props to pose with,- from Ninja Turtle backpacks to helium balloons.

We drank, chatted, laughed and generally behaved like crazy people all the while having fun during about 2 or so hours of shooting. I used two quite different light set ups- one against our grey studio wall, more low-key and dramatic and the other against our white studio wall with the lighting quite high key, including a shadow cast by the subject onto the wall behind.

I gave as little as possible intervention and rather tried to allow for a safe space for creative play to happen. Initially once everyone had arrived I explained the space, the shoot, the intention for the images, the choices we had. Then we cracked a bottle of vino and the process got under way.

Most of the women (and some of my colleagues who were still working in the adjoining room) commented afterwards about how much they had enjoyed the bizarre evening, the freedom and expression of both the body and the nude form as well as the relaxed and open atmosphere that had been present in the studio.

It had surprised me specifically that my preconceived notions of body insecurity of a small group of women who didn’t know each other well, were so totally and  unpretentiously at ease and trusting of both the camera and each other.

A Portrait of Elize Vossgatter: Artist & Mother

I shot this portrait of Elize in my studio this week. She needed a profile  for a collaborative exhibition she is involved with for Infecting The City, an event held in Cape Town.

Pregnancy & birth: This is Lynette

Liam-Lynette-&-Stephen-05-photograph-by-Leah-Hawker

Photographing a mother and tiny brand new baby is and always will be very special and memorable. Within the first day of their lives together one already sees magic happening: Motherhood.

I photographed these portraits of Lynette and baby Liam at the Cape Medi Clinic were he was born in September. Every tiny detail is in place and perfect and the parents are in a strange state of awe, shock, emotion, joy and pride (or it at least this is my interpretation of these moments!).

I had photographed a series of nude pregnancy images of Lynette just a short time before and was aiming to create a kind of parallel version depending on what scenario I found when I arrived, or, how possible it would be to shoot her and the new babe from above.

These are the beautiful and very foetal images I documented in studio while she was still pregnant…

I love the image which incorporated the environment around the bed (above). It emphasises the foetal quality of the image and also creates a relationship between subject and documentor.

The images are so soft and she looks like the epitomy of a pregnant women.

When I arrived in the hospital and walked into their room Lynette was standing square in the centre of the room and looked like a subject from a Rineke Dijkstra portrait (images of women immediately after they had given birth, standing up against a clinical hospital environment and holding their babies).

On the left is one of Rineke Dijksra's portraits of a new mother and on the left is exactly how I found lunette when I walked into her hospital room. It was like déjavu.

I photographed a series of portraits but this one I also really like for its imitation and parallel to the studio portraits I shot of her.
