I heard about LUI during one of my stays in France last year with a client who told me of the magazine’s relaunch. I bought this issue in Paris, it’s the second issue since it’s relaunch in September 2013 and I was impressed with the great layout and fantastic variety in their nude editorials of which there were 5.
A tiny bit of history:
LUI (French for “Him”) is a French adult entertainment mag which was created in November 1963 by Daniel Filipacchi (a fashion photographer and jack of all trades it seems). “The objective of the publication was to bring some charm “à la française” to the market of men’s magazines, following the success of Playboy in the USA, launched just a decade before”- quote taken from Wikipedia.
The mag was rather successful in its early years and onwards into the early eighties, thereafter it began a long decline and subsequent multiple relaunches (3 times until 2013).
Here are a selection of the nude (or sexually provocative) images from the November 2013 issue:
The layout design and style is great and I love how they incorporated nudes even into the parfum and party snaps sections.
Here, in order, are the five nude editorials published in the magazine, the first features Georgia May Jagger, shot by Terry Richardson. A huge focus on her lips and teeth through the editorial is very explicit without being that nude:
The second editorial shot by Pierre Even is a series of B&W fashion images. The article is a one page interview (I assume the interview is with the model/actress shown in the editorail- all is in French of course so I’m clueless as to the content but naturally am not too bothered as I read magazines for the pictures only anyway…)
The third editorial is very striking, shot with a nude brunette model and a much older male model, the images look to be set on the coast in a romantic Mediterranean style villa. It is ultimately a mens fashion editorial pimped up with nudity. It is very beautifully shot by Mark Segal.
The fourth pictorial “EDITA” shot by Cedric Buchet has a distinctly retro and voyeuristic feel, it is shot incorporating scenes showing the photographer documenting the model and images of the model herself. Loving the colors and old car interior, his angles are pretty amazing considering the use of such a small space.
The last pictorial, shot by Olivier Zahm, look alike a portrait nude series on a violinist. Quite a cool way of covering a pictorial while adding some content weight… Also shot with a retro British pop-cult sort of feel.
And this random but totally great image features on one of the last couple of pages. Again, I have no clue what it’s about and so from my clueless perspective I just think its a pretty bizarre and fun image.
Last page of the mag- Eiffel Tower see though knickers and a Moulin Rouge back page ad.
